Funchal has a dramatic appearance thanks to its location on the side of an amphitheatre-like valley – if the climb to the top is daunting then you can catch a cable car up and ride a wicker toboggan back down! If you want to venture yet higher perhaps head to Cabo Girão, an immense sea cliff with a glass walkway 1,640 feet above the water.

Santa Cruz, Tenerife
Discover the largest and most populous of the Canaries with ample time to seek out the capital’s cosmopolitan charms. Alternatively, go hiking up Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide, or enjoy a leisurely catamaran trip to visit a pod of whales that live year round off the perennially sunny south coast. If your cruise visits in December you can enjoy on-board festivities as you cruise towards Tenerife; raise a glass during cocktail hour before tucking into a traditional Christmas lunch. To round off your special day you can look forward to the traditional Christmas Day concert in Santa Cruz harbor performed by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra – it’s sure to be a memorable event. Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
The buzzing atmosphere of Las Palmas is evident as soon as you arrive, and you can make the most of it with an overnight mooring. The city has a distinctly Mediterranean vibe and even the old quarter, Vegueta, is a popular haunt filled with busy bars and stylish restaurants. If you like a quieter atmosphere, perhaps visit the resort of Puerto Mogan on the south of the island, with its small network of pretty canals.

Sporting black sand beaches and scorched lava fields, Lanzarote’s volcanic origins are laid bare for all to see. An off-road 4x4 safari is one way to experience the island’s stark beauty, or you can discover a different side on an invigorating trek through the Valley of 1,000 Palms to the cool confines of the Green Caves.

Morocco’s largest city sizzles with an intoxicating fusion of sights and sounds. Experience the authentic African vibe in its old medina and admire elegant art deco influenced architecture, such as the intriguing Sacred Heart church, a reminder of the city’s French period of rule. Of special note is the Hassan II Mosque with its 689-foot high minaret, built to commemorate the king’s 60th birthday. Alternatively, experience the buzz of Marrakech on an optional visit.

The largest city in the Galicia region has an alluring and hilly Old Town where the street names hint at what you’ll find for sale: hats at Sombrereiros and oysters on Calle des las Ostras. You can also explore the waterfront and perhaps try a local fish dish such as chinchos – small fried fish – in a tapas bar. You might like to visit the medieval town of Tui and compare and contrast a couple of local wines at a parador.
