Embark on a winter sun voyage to the Canaries

Cruise under the august 25 de April suspension bridge, oft compares to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, to reach Lisbon’s elegant capital. Renowned for its array of architectural styles, in particular the Moorish Alfama district, Lisbon contains a host of must-see attractions. Explore the colorful 18th-century squares and you'll be rewarded with such historical delights as Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Monument to the Discoveries – both reminders of Portugal’s seafaring prowess.

Funchal became the Madeira’s capital soon after Portuguese sailors discovered this ‘island of wood’ in 1418. Set around a grand bay, Funchal offers elegant squares, a striking cathedral, subtropical gardens and broad avenues for you to discover. While here, be sure to enjoy a glass of Madeira wine at one of the pavement cafes or, for an even better taste of the island, join a cookery class. Alternatively, outdoor lovers are sure to enjoy a trip into the mountains beyond on a levada walk which will follow mad-made waters channels through lush forests that give way to panoramic views.

As ‘King of the Canaries’, Tenerife is the largest in this sunny archipelago and features landscapes that range from forests of eucalyptus and pine, to otherworldly black-sand beaches. Spain’s highest peak, Mount Teide towers above them all. You can spend your time strolling around Santa Cruz, the capital, and admiring the ornate 16th-century architecture, or perhaps join an island sightseeing tour. Alternatively, explore the north of the island’s stunning natural scenery on a hiking tour in La Rambla de Castro which encompasses palm groves and passes over coastal cliffs.

By far the greenest of the Canaries La Palma is often known as the 'Isla Bonita' or beautiful island. From the fertile orchards and verdant forests of the north, to the dramatic black wilderness of the south, the island offers a wealth of contrasting landscapes, while its capital, Santa Cruz, sits in an amphitheatre on the slope of a volcanic crater. Explore here or join a trek to pass through massive pine forests and follow a trek through volcanic areas. Afterwards, enjoy tasty tapas at a local restaurant.

Fuerteventura’s capital is a bustling port with whitewashed buildings and collection of outdoor artworks by local artists – you’ll be able to see at least one, a giant seashell, right by the harbor. Perhaps go shopping in pedestrianised Calle Primero de Mayo, relax on the Blue Flag beach or opt to join a nature walk to discover the island’s plutonic rock formations and traditional pastoral architecture.

La Coruña, Spain

From this port on the north-west coast of Spain, you can visit the city of Santiago de Compostela.
