Gothenburg, Sweden

Gothenburg, Sweden

Gothenburg, Sweden

Graced with canals reminiscent of Amsterdam, Gothenburg is the largest port in the Nordic countries. A university town that’s also Sweden’s second-biggest city, Gothenburg has a rich industrial past and one that has long been tied to the surrounding sea, with generations of residents who’ve made their living from or on the water. That’s not to say that culture is absent. Gothenburg boasts a notable museum of art, a very comprehensive design museum, and another dedicated to the history and manufacture of the Volvo automobile. There’s also a vibrant live music scene here and plenty of spectator sports to enjoy. For those who love nature, the city is dotted with numerous parks and the Gothenburg Botanical Garden has often been lauded as one of the most beautiful in Europe. And when it’s time to eat, there are five Michelin-starred restaurants from which to choose as well as hundreds of others.

Bremerhaven (for Bremen), Germany

As European cities go, Bremerhaven is an infant, founded in 1827. This seaport city, a sister city to nearby Bremen, is largely post-war at its city center but certainly worth a few hours of exploration time. Of particular note is the contemporary architecture along the waterfront, the German Maritime Museum, the German Emigration Center, Klimahaus climate museum, the Bremerhaven Zoo, and the harborside aquarium known as Atlanticum.
